brief
I used book covers as a self-directed way to practice my typography, use hand-drawn illustrations in a practical setting, and improve my narrative skills.

pitch
I created three imaginary  genre anthologies that use evocative illustration, typography, and titling to communicate the specific theme of each anthology.

breakdown
Since this project was completely personal, it also allowed me to pursue “fun” designs in the context of a practical project. I doodle and sketch as a creative outlet, and I enjoy using typography in ways that are normally too decorative for everyday design.
This project became a way to let my creative outlet also function as a serious design. It was an opportunity to set pragmatic layouts and handle larger amounts of text, an opportunity which doesn’t often arise in scholastic work.
I built out back covers, flaps, and spines for all three anthologies, and typeset the first page of the first book. This provided an exercise in practical typesetting, an opportunity that doesn't often arise in the classroom.
I also created marketing images for each anthology: the practice of promoting books via instagram through heavily stylized photos (fondly dubbed "bookstagram") is well-used by publishers to spark interest and drive sales.
